In 2011, Mauricio suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and barely survived, losing much of his balance, coordination and short term memory, among other challenging symptoms that would change his life forever. When his neurosurgeon told him that he had only a 2-year window to recover and regain lost abilities, panic and anxiety settled in. 8 years later, Mauricio discusses how long distance running and the support of Achilles International not only helped him far exceed those expectations by continuing to improve his impressive marathon times, which qualify him for the prestigious Boston Marathon, but also empowered him to become a strong advocate for the Brain Injury Association. He is a shining example of how hard work, resilience and belief in one's self can be rewarded.
